A friend once told me that myths are man’s way of making sense of the world. She explained how the tale of Pandora’s box is an effort to grasp the origin of evil in our world. The many gods in mythology reveal the human longing for a higher power. Even pagan religions, whose followers have made human sacrifices to their gods, reveal that we long to be at peace with a divine being.
At the essence of the human soul is a desire to be known and loved–by his equals and his creator. If one of us could design the best message from a divine being, it might look something like this.
- You were created for a purpose.
- You are loved, regardless of your worthiness.
- You can be freed from the shame of your own failings.
- You will receive strength to live victoriously in the pain.
- You can someday escape our cursed, aching, suffering world for something better.
Last week, while listening to Beth Moore speak at Lifeway’s Women’s Forum, God whispered into my spirit. Beth was reading a passage about how Jesus has given us all we could ever need for life on this cursed earth. (2 Peter 1:1-9) Suddenly I realized that those verses were the best message a human could receive!! In my sleep-deprived, jet-lagged state, I jerked to attention with a rush of excitement.
This ancient, holy Book tells us everything we crave to know.
The God who created a universe so vast that we cannot cross it in generations made you and me. He designed each bit of our DNA so that we are unique among the billions of humans He has created. He gave us each an individual purpose that no one else can fill.
This same God loves us so much that He didn’t discard us when we violated His protection time and time again. In fact, He loves each of us so intensely that He rolled out a perfectly orchestrated plan for our redemption…one where He suffered a cruel death to buy us back from sin.
We don’t have to wallow in our self-caused, sin-induced misery. We can acknowledge our miserable state, hand our pitiful selves to Him, and let Him remove those sins completely. He removes the guilt that condemns us.
Jesus stands before His Father and says…
“This one is Mine. I cover her with My righteousness.”
God doesn’t stop there. He makes our true selves come alive as He plants His Spirit inside, giving us all the resources need to live in a cursed world. He whispers guidance to our inner ears. As we read His Word, He guides us into understanding. He teaches us to communicate with Him.
And if that weren’t enough, He promises to bring us home to live with Him someday. In that time, there will be no more tears, sickness, war, or death. We will be surrounded by all His adopted children, His angels, and most importantly, His own glorious presence.
Like Aries in the Wonder Woman movie, God could have destroyed us because of our failure to be good. He could have rightfully declared us to be unfit to live. But like Diana, God declares His love for us, not because we deserve it, but because God IS LOVE.
He loves us so much that He provided an escape route, if only we will turn away from the things that separate us from Him…our pride, our shame, our sin.
