Call to me and I will answer you…

Have you noticed that life does not lack opinions? Opinions are everywhere.  You don’t even have to search for opinions, opinions will come and find you.  I remember almost 5 years ago now, my husband and I were at Costco with our newborn baby in our arms, and a stranger came up to us.  She didn’t come up to us to admire this sweet gift God had brought into the world just a few days before, she came to scold us for having our new baby out in public.  She was appalled that we would bring a baby outside (it was summer by the way) around people, so early in life.  We weren’t seeking her opinion, she brought it right on over to us, free of charge.  Life seems to work that way often.

In a world full of opinions, how often do we seek wisdom? I know that I’m guilty of not only asking others for their opinions, but I’m also guilty of taking the unsolicited ones to heart.  If someone has a negative opinion of who I am, or what I’m supposed to be doing it often hurts my feelings.  I’ve been told more times that I can count that it shouldn’t matter to me what other people think (especially if it’s not true) but it does matter to me.  Why is that? Why does it seem to matter so much what someone else’s opinion is, especially when it lacks wisdom?  I think that’s because I get so distant from what the word says about who I am, and who HE is, that the opinions can disguise themselves as truth.

As I was preparing for this blog I really wanted to know what the bible says about wisdom.  I know of a few verses off of the top of my head but I wanted to dive deeper and see exactly what God says about it.  I was amazed at how many places, and how many ways God explains wisdom.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. James 1:5
You don’t have to ask the world what you should do, the world is a lost place anyhow, go straight to the source.  He gives wisdom GENEROUSLY!
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. James 3:17
The wisdom that comes straight from God is PURE, and PEACABLE, GENTLE, FULL OF MERCY, IMPARTIAL, AND SINCERE! That is incredible.  That wisdom is not tainted by life experiences.  It’s not like opinion that comes from man which may have ulterior motives for personal gain.  It’s wisdom that is pure, and gentle, just all around lovely and for your benefit.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
Proverbs 3:5
How often do we think we have it all figured out, only to be completely wrong? That doesn’t happen with God.  He doesn’t change.  He is not moved by feelings, or circumstances, or fear and doubt, He knows which path is right for us in the big picture, not just right now.  He knows the way when things don’t make sense to us.
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” 1 Corinthians 3:18-20
That’s one big difference between opinions and wisdom.  Those who are very opinionated will seek the opportunity to tell you just how they think things should be.  THEY think they are wise, THEY think they have it all figured out, but those who are wise are the ones who walk hand in hand with God and seek HIS instruction.  They may share when asked, those who are wise in the Lord truly do have a LOT to offer, but they aren’t boasting about that.  If you want to know who the wise really are, you’ll have to pay careful attention, they aren’t going to raise their hand when asked.
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Proverbs 13:20

Are you blessed enough to be surrounded by someone who is wise in the Lord? Walking this life together with a person who seeks wisdom straight from God rather than gathering opinions from this world is someone you should greatly treasure.  Godly wisdom is rare these days and if you find yourself blessed enough to share life with those who keep pointing you to the Lord, thank Him for them.
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3
When you find yourself in the place you need to know what to do, whether in big circumstances or in small, ask God to breathe His wisdom your way.  You’ll be so much better off seeking Him than waiting for the opinions of this world to come find you, trust me…they will…even in Costco.

About Rosalynn Lasley

I’ve been happily married to my high school sweetheart more years of my life than believable. It’s true what they say, time flies when you’re having fun. God has blessed us with 4 children, 3 we have the pleasure of raising, and one waiting for us in Heaven.

I have always enjoyed writing but my call to ministry came during some of my most difficult times thus far. Writing for Alaska Christian Women’s Ministry helped me start to make sense of all that God has been walking me through, even when sometimes it’s messy and painful. I never realized that telling my story, even the ugly parts, could be encouraging to other women until I started writing. It’s true that God will make beauty from ashes, you just have to let Him.

My writing is often serious, and sometimes heavy in nature, but in real life I’m usually the complete opposite of serious. I LOVE TO LAUGH, and say that humor is my unofficial spiritual gift. I’m fairly awkward when first meeting someone, but if I can make you laugh then I think we’ll end up being excellent friends. I’m certain that my husband is the only person on earth that doesn’t think I’m all that funny. If I can make him laugh, I’m a happy girl!

I have the blessing of serving in the junior high ministry at my local church, and find it such a joy hanging out with those smelly young people, week after week. They bless my heart far more than I could ever bless theirs in the short amount of time we meet each week.
