Praying together!

About a year ago our home church Pastor attended a wedding out of state.  When he got back he had a very clear message for his congregation, pray together.  Pray together as a couple and pray together as a family.  Figuring that we always pray together at meals and at bedtime, we thought we were already doing this.  However, as his message of praying together became more clear, we knew we were missing out.  Still, my husband and I were reluctant.  Praying to God is very intimate.  It is our inner most thoughts and fears.  We can talk to God about things that we could never talk about to anyone else! Still, one night I looked at my husband and asked if we should give it a try.  Let me tell you, it was AWESOME!!!!

Through praying together we can complete each others thoughts, ideas, and problems.  We can remember parts of things that the other had forgotten.  We can see both sides of a situation and understand how the other is feeling and what they are truly struggling with.  It is a bonding experience.  A way to work together for God.

Through a little research I found that this is not a new phenomenon.  The purpose of praying together as a couple and a family helps us to align ourselves with God while aligning ourselves with the needs of others.  It is a time when we can leave all our desires behind.  It is a beautiful way to learn from one another and be able to advance God’s glory.

I’m not going to lie, it was awkward at first.  Opening yourself up to your spouse the way that you open yourself up to God is not easy.  But this is a time where you are humbling yourself, and humility is beautiful.  This is not, however, a time to show off and act like you know the answers or to shame your spouse or family.  This is not a time to point our flaws or mistakes.  This is not a time to obtain accolades from each other.  This is true honesty and humility!

So, I encourage you (if you don’t already) to pray with your spouse and pray with your family.  Out loud and honest.  You will learn how you can help your family in so many ways.  Your path towards God will become so much clearer and you will learn a lot about the people who live under your roof!

19“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:19-20

We have three sons, three baby goats, five cats, a dog, and umpteen chickens. I love to cook, garden, and homeschool my boys. My life is full of dirt and noise and I wouldn’t have it any other way! I was raised in church but found that the birth of my first child really brought me to the feet of God. I am a clown at heart and absolutely love a good corny joke!
